DESCRIPTION
The Sony Vaio P is available in five colour options: Dove White, Emerald Green, Glossy Black, Gold, and Sangria Red. It has an 8" LED-backlit display with native resolution of 1600x768. It weighs 1.4-1.7 pounds and features 2 GB of RAM combined with various Intel Atom processors.
The preinstalled operating system is the 32-bit version of either Windows Vista Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, or Windows Vista Business, dependent on model. The P-series also incorporate an "Instant Mode", which uses a Linux build coupled with Sony's XrossMediaBar interface to provide web-browsing and media player capabilities with a 20-second boot time. In June 2009 Sony made driver support available for downgrading the range to Microsoft Windows XP.
Several people have succeeded in installing various versions of Linux on the Vaio P, most notably Ubuntu Linux (Version 9.04, Jaunty). Ubuntu is arguably the best alternative due to its ease of installation and configuration, and the fact that full 3D graphics can be utilized with this setup . It's arguable that Linux or something similar is a better pick for the Vaio P, as the Intel Atom processor is not of the same class as typical desktop CPUs and doesn't fare too well under Vista's significant resource requirements, despite being loaded with 2GB of DDR2 RAM.

An integrated webcam (optional in some regions of the world) is located on the upper right corner. It also features built-in GPS, Bluetooth, 802.11 b/g/n wireless, mobile broadband, and an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500 video chipset. It has no optical drive, like most ultraportables and netbooks. Dependent on the model, storage is either a 60GB hard disk drive or 64GB or 128GB solid state drive. On June 26th, 2009, Sony released the VAIO Signature Collection P series, which has an Intel Atom Z540 and a 256 GB SSD, retailing at $1899.99.
